What's the difference Between Precious & Semi Precious Stones?
Diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires all count as precious stones. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone and "rarity" seems to have a grouping of its own. But, to the layman it's in the eye of the beholder. The first four have a higher dollar sign. If you have a black opal it is considered rare and very expensive. It is #8 on the top ten most expensive gems.

"Emeralds that are smooth and whose colour is like a throat of a parrot. the back of a firefly, leaves of the water lily or the tail of the peacock, bring luck" The vedas translation from Sanscrit, 1869. (The Natural History Museum in London, England.)
A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone, gem or jewel) is a piece of mineral, which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewellery. Certain rocks and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewellery, and considered to be gemstones. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone. Wikipedia
