July Birthstone -Ruby
The ruby is among the most highly prized of all gemstones. Larger rubies are surprisingly harder to find than large
diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. As a result, rubies’ value increases with size more than any other gemstone.

To the ancients, the ruby was known as "the king of gems". To some it was a representation of the sun, love and devotion.
The Ruby was used in the Coronation Rings. A favorite among the Royals. Fergie's engagement ring was a Ruby surrounded by diamonds.
It is an excellent choice for an engagement ring. The traditional wedding anniversary gift is a ruby for a couple's 15th and 40th anniversary year.

Cabochon Cut
Antique jewellery often features cabochon (Kab-a-shon) rubies, cut in a convex form (domed with a flat base). They are highly polished but not faceted. Cabochon cuts are traditionally the least expensive of the ruby cuts. I found this information of great interest. Just recently at a Sotheby's auction, an 'antique' ruby ring was sold. This ring was penned as Sugar Loaf for its round shape and no cuts something like the cabochon cut. Yet, it s the most expensive ruby in the world. Normally, the best rubies come from Burma with their deep red colours such as the Burmese Sugar Loaf. The sugar Loaf Ruby ring was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction for $2.4 million.
